Online exams
Online exams for schools that are timed, secure and fair
Set an exam once and let the system handle the clock, the shuffling, the warnings and the marking. Teachers mark only what needs a human, and release results when they are ready.
- Server-kept timer and autosave
- Full screen, no copy and paste, tab-switch warnings
- Optional camera checks set per exam
- Instant results or released after marking
What you get
Timed and scheduled
Choose when the exam opens and how long it lasts. The timer is kept on our servers, so changing the phone clock does not help.
Secure mode
Full screen, copy, paste, right-click and shortcuts blocked, and leaving the page counted as a warning.
Camera on request
The examiner can require the camera to stay on; a few still photos are kept for the examiner to check.
Shuffled papers
Questions and answer options are shuffled for each learner, so neighbours do not see the same order.
Self-marking
Automatic questions are marked on hand-in. Matching, ordering and gaps earn part marks.
Results your way
Release immediately, after marking, or when you press Release. Learners see score, percentage and grade.
How an online exam runs
- 1The teacher adds an Exam in a course. Sensible defaults are already set: one attempt, 60 minutes, shuffling on, secure mode on, results after marking.
- 2Learners open the exam at the set time, read the rules, and (if required) turn on the camera before starting.
- 3Answers save as they go. Leaving the page or full screen gives a warning; going over the limit hands the paper in automatically.
- 4When time runs out, whatever was saved is handed in. Automatic questions are marked straight away.
- 5Essays and uploads wait in the marking queue. The teacher marks, then releases results and sends the marks to the gradebook.
Honest about what a browser can and cannot stop
No web page can stop a determined learner from using a second phone, and iPhones do not allow full screen. Rather than promise the impossible, the exam room detects and records: every time a learner leaves the page, exits full screen, or tries to copy or paste, it is logged with the time, and warnings are counted. The examiner sees this log beside the paper and can decide what it means.
For high-stakes exams, combine online papers with supervision in a computer lab, require the camera, and keep the number of warnings low. Our guide on running online exams safely covers this step by step.
Question types
- One answer and several answers (multiple choice)
- True or false
- Short answer and number with a tolerance

Frequently asked questions
Can learners cheat by switching tabs?
Each switch is detected, logged with the time and counted as a warning. The examiner decides how many warnings are allowed before the paper is handed in automatically.
What happens if the internet drops during an exam?
Answers are saved as the learner goes. When the connection returns the learner continues where they were, as long as time remains; when time runs out the saved answers are handed in.
Are camera photos stored?
Only when the examiner turns the camera rule on for that exam. A few still photos are kept with the attempt for the learner’s teachers and school leaders. No video is recorded and no face recognition is used.
Can exam marks go on the report card?
Yes. Marked exams are sent to the gradebook as an assessment in an exam set such as End of Term, and count towards the term result and positions.
