Why every school in Uganda needs a digital front door
Parents now look for schools on their phones before they visit. Here is what they search for, and how a school can be found, trusted and chosen.

Most parents in Uganda begin their search for a school the same way: on a phone, often late in the evening, after a conversation with a relative or a neighbour. They type the name of a school, or "best schools in Wakiso", or "boarding schools near Mukono", and they decide within minutes which schools are worth a phone call.
What parents look for first
From our conversations with head teachers and parents, the same questions come up again and again:
- Can I reach the school? A phone number that works, and someone who answers. A WhatsApp number is even better.
- Where exactly is it? District, sub-county and how to get there.
- Day, boarding, or both? And whether it is a government or private school.
- How did learners do? National examination results matter, and parents compare schools on them.
- What will it cost? Even a fee range helps a family decide whether to call.
A front door that works while you sleep
A school's "digital front door" is simply the place where a family meets the school online. It does not need to be expensive. On the IWAT school directory, every secondary school in Uganda already has a page with its location and phone numbers, and families can apply for a place directly.
When a school claims its page, it can add photos, fee ranges, the levels it teaches and a WhatsApp number, and answer applications from a simple dashboard. If it wants more, the same information becomes a full school website in a few clicks.
Three things to do this term
- Find your school in the directory and check that the details are right.
- Claim it and add a WhatsApp number, a few good photos and your fee range.
- Answer every application within a day. Families notice, and they talk.
A good first impression online is now part of admissions. The schools that make it easy to be found, trusted and contacted are the ones families call first.
